FLYING MACHINES play emotive and dramatic music, drawing upon influences as diverse as jazz, progressive rock and metal to create an utterly unique and modern sound.
Formed by guitarist Alex Munk in 2014, Flying Machines features some of the most innovative young musicians to emerge in recent years from the UK jazz scene, Matt Robinson on piano/keyboards, Conor Chaplin on electric bass and Dave Hamblett on drums. Centred on Alex's unique compositional approach, the band fuse visceral improvisation with anthemic melodies and lusciously textured soundscapes. It's a sound shot through with the here and now of London's cutting-edge music scene, a decadent mash up of free-wheeling improvisations, prog rock energy and ambient meditations that never detract from the emotive lyricism at the music's core.
Having released their self-titled debut album to critical acclaim in October 2016, with glowing reviews in the likes of Guitaristmagazine and The Guardian, Flying Machines went on to complete a 24 date UK tour supported by Arts Council England which ended with a sold out, headline performance at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club. The band went on to perform on the BBC Introducing stage at Latitude Festival.
Having recently finished off a breakthrough year with performances at London Jazz Festival and Cambridge Jazz Festival, Flying Machines have recorded their second album with the Grammy, MOBO and Mercury nominated producer Sonny Johns at the world class Livingston Studio 1 recording studio. Entitled ‘New Life’, it will be released on Ubuntu Music in October 2018.
